PRP Hair Restoration

Androgenic alopecia (AA) is a hereditary, hormone dependent condition. It is the most common type of hair loss, affecting up to 80% of men, 50% of women. Women struggle with thinning hair due to hormone changes in pregnancy, stress and other medical conditions; and 66% of postmenopausal women battle with AA.

AA characteristically appears first as a widening of the part, followed by overall thinning in women. In men the condition frequently begins in their 20s with thinning and progresses in a familiar pattern. Pattern hair loss is distressing affecting self-image and confidence, well-being and quality of life. The results of PRP studies have validated effectiveness in men and women with AA.

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is a safe and effective hair restoration treatment to reduce hair loss, increase hair diameter and density in people with AA. Many scientific studies have proven that PRP therapy is effective to increase hair count, thickness and growth.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet Rich Plasma is a product made from your own blood (autologous) and contains therapeutic concentrations of platelets to enhance the healing process. Because it is made from your own blood, there is no risk of allergic reaction.

While blood platelets are best known for their blood clotting ability, platelets function as a natural reservoir of hundreds of biologically active proteins called growth factors that play a key role in wound healing and tissue repair. PRP harnesses the power of your body’s natural healing abilities to promote follicle regeneration, and hair regrowth.

How is PRP made?

A small amount of your blood is collected and spun to separate the PRP from other blood cells and increases platelet concentrations. The biologically active growth factors in abundance in PRP stimulate dormant hair follicles to awaken.

The PRP Treatment

PRP can be injected into the scalp or applied topically post microneedling.

How does PRP work?

Hair growth is regulated in a specific cycle. Studies report that PRP promotes hair growth by prolonging the growth phase of the hair cycle, as well as waking up dormant hair follicles.

It is the growth factors in PRP that act as biological switches to stimulate and enhance the function of the hair follicles.  When the scalp and hair follicles are soaked in PRP the concentrated plasma and growth factors  reduce inflammation, improve circulation, promote hair growth and thickening of existing hair.

A 2019 review of the clinical studies on PRP reports that the use of PRP is beneficial treatment for AA in 3-4 monthly sessions, followed by a 3-6 month – maintenance period. The only potential side effects reported include transient swelling and redness, and temporary discomfort from the treatment. PRP treatment for hair loss is a low risk intervention with high patient satisfaction, and objective improvements.
