Microneedling with SkinPen
What is microneedling?
Microneedling, also referred to as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that encourages new collagen production to renew skin tone and texture, improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve the appearance of acne scarring, and stretch marks, and tighten the skin. Microneedling is a safe and effective anti-aging procedure with little to no downtime. 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun (photoaging).
What is collagen?
Collagen is a protein and a key foundational component of skin. It makes strong and resilient skin cells that give the skin structural integrity, providing shape and contours for healthy, youthful looking skin. Elastin is the substance that gives the skin elasticity to help maintain healthy skin structure, function, and a youthful appearance.
We naturally produce collagen and elastin in abundance until the mid 20s when production begins to decline by about 1% per year and accelerates after age 30. Aging and sun damage deteriorate collagen and elastin which contribute to formation of wrinkles, sagging skin and hyperpigmentation. Low levels of collagen and elastin lead to wrinkles, sagging, skin fragility and irregular skin tone and texture.
What is SkinPen?
SkinPen is the first microneedling device that is FDA cleared as a medical device and safety certified. SkinPen is a superior needling device that is:
- clinically tested and proven
- requires little to no downtime
- provides results with one to three sessions
- result that last up to six months
What does SkinPen treat?
It is indicated to treat acne scars, surgical scars, stretch marks, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, tighten loose eyelid skin, and hyperpigmentation on the face and neck. It is safe for people of color.
How does SkinPen microneedling work?
SkinPen microneedling activates the skin’s natural healing response by penetrating the skin’s surface with microneedles which create microscopic wounds (channels). Controlled skin wounding triggers the immune system to increase blood flow and release growth factors and proteins that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin begin to create new tissues. This is why microneedling is collagen-induction therapy.
The synthesis of new collagen and elastin rebuilds the skin’s foundation. Damaged skin is replaced with new healthy skin for firmer, smoother, more radiant, and younger looking skin. The result is improved skin quality, and visible improvement in facial acne scars and neck wrinkles. Treatments are minimally invasive.
What is the treatment like?
The Pen contains 14 fine microneedles. During your appointment your skin will be cleaned, and a topical numbing agent applied. The pen is run over the skin on the face and neck creating thousands of micro wounds. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. After the procedure your doctor may apply a soothing serum. The skin will be red and tight and look and feel like a sunburn that will resolve within a day or two. You will be advised to wear a blocking sunscreen.
Results will become visible gradually within a week. Treatment for deeper scars or marks can take longer.
Dr. Zeena may combine your microneedling with other treatments such as platelet-rich plasma, chemical peels, Botox®, and topical creams and serums to enhance the results.
