All About Botox

Posted on: December 23rd, 2021 by Our Team

Botox is a neurotoxin that is commonly used to achieve a more rejuvenated, refreshed appearance. Botox is one of the most widely used and longest established FDA-approved wrinkle-reducing injectables.

Botox relaxes dynamic wrinkles by temporarily blocking the signal between the nerve and the muscle. As a result, the muscle is no longer able to contract, thus relaxing and softening the overlying wrinkles.

Mechanism of Action

Botox, or Botulinum toxin A, works by blocking the release of a key chemical called acetylcholine, which prevents the transmittal of signals from axon endings of nerve cells to muscles, causing what is termed flaccid paralysis. This “paralysis” of the treated muscles makes Botox useful in smoothing facial lines, as it allows wrinkles and lines in the treatment area to relax and soften. Botox can also be used clinically in treating neurological and neuromuscular disorders.

What to Expect

Botox is a frequently used alternative to invasive cosmetic procedures, in large part due to its effectiveness and minimal side effects. It can be used to treat cosmetic concerns including:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Lateral and horizontal brow lines
  • Worry lines
  • Chin wrinkles
  • Wrinkles around and under the eyes
  • Vertical lip lines
  • “Bunny” lines on the nose
  • Neck bands
  • Mouth corners
  • Gummy smiles

The process is simple with minimal pain. Botox injections can be delivered in a short period of time, often within 10-15 minutes. However, while the procedure is simple, the success of your Botox treatment depends upon the skills and expertise of the injector. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Zeena has the skills, experience, and artistic eye to provide patients with a desired rejuvenated appearance.

How long does Botox last?

Within a week of injection, improvements become obvious and continue to improve up to a month.

Studies show that when Botox treatment is done on a regular basis, the muscles learn not to contract, and less Botox is needed to achieve the same results. Further, regular Botox treatments employed early in the formation of wrinkles can help alleviate more severe lines and wrinkles.

Eventually, the neurotoxin in Botox will wear off and the nerves will once again be able to send signals to the muscles to contract. Botox typically lasts approximately 3-4 months, though every patient is different. Some patients may notice that it lasts longer, closer to 4-6 months. At the same time, other patients may wish to get another treatment after 2 months as the effects wear off. However, many notice that after subsequent treatments, the effects seem to last longer.
